SLO STORM G98 U15’s make historical run at USYS President’s Cup Region IV Championships…
San Luis Obispo Soccer Club G98 STORM received an automatic bid to the Region IV USYS President’s Cup, held this year in Morgan Hill, California from June 11-15. The STORM girls representing SLOSC, the Central Coast and Cal South were awarded the bid for the Regional Tournament, following their 1-0 win against Santa Monica United in April at the Cal South State Cup President’s Division.
Beginning with group play, the G98 STORM took first place in the group after 2 wins against the Cal North State Cup Champions (San Francisco Vikings) and Alaska State Champs (Eclipse). The last game in group play against the second Cal North team involved in the competition finished with a tie (2-2 was the final result) which guaranteed first place going into the single elimination rounds. Having won their bracket, the team opened knockout single elimination on Saturday morning with a comfortable 3-0 win over the Hawaii State Champs (Lanikai Tuesday), at the Morgan Hill Soccer Complex. The semi-finals game was played late on Saturday afternoon against the Nevada State Champs (Players Elite). With goals from Brooke Minetti and Emma Hotaling, the G98 STORM won the game 2-0 and were awarded the incredible opportunity of playing in the Region IV President’s Cup final against the Utah State Champs.
Playing in their sixth game in five days, the girls lost a very tough decision, 2-1 to the Utah representative, Crush Blue. An evenly played match finished 1-1 the regular 80 minutes, forcing a 30 minute overtime. 9 minutes into the second half of overtime, the Utah State Champs scored what proved to be the winning goal on a corner-kick. With a total of 6 games in the Regional tournament, the U-15 Storm team had an impressive record of 4 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss, with 13 goals scored and 5 goals conceded. The strong offensive performance (G98 STORM scored the highest number of goals out of the teams involved) was given a lot of credit to Brooke Minetti (#8), who was named top goal-scorer of the tournament with 6 goals, and Emma Hotaling (#9) with 5 assists in 6 games.
The SLO Storm G98 team is coached by Bernardo Silva and assisted by John McGuigan and Andrew Ragain. The roster is composed by: Rylie Johnson, Hannah Ogden, Maggie O’Hare, Grace Park & Kristina Smelser (San Luis Obispo HS); Cate Boller, Theanna Longfellow, Raquel Robeson & Madison Zambo (Arroyo Grande HS); Gabriela Flores & Emily Riforgiate (Mission Preparatory HS); Allison Keil & Melanie Ragain (Atascadero HS); Brooke Minetti & Alexandra Stewart (Righetti HS); Emma Hotaling (Morro Bay HS); Mayah Pico (Lompoc HS); and Miriam Robles (Paso Robles HS).
