The SLO Storm G97 team was finalist on the Premier bracket of the Santa Clara Sporting Girls Invitational losing 3-0 in the final against the #8 ranked in the nation, Santa Clara Sporting G97. After finishing first in their bracket with a total of 19 points after two wins and a +6 goal differential, the team went on to the quarter-finals Sunday mid-day to play against Empire 98 Blaze and won that game 3-0. The quarter-final win granted the Storm team the possibility to play in the semi-final against the Spanish Springs Lady Jaguars from the state of Nevada, and the game went into overtime tied 0-0. With 1 minute to go in the 2nd overtime, center-midfielder Samantha Fernandez slipped a ball through the opponents defense into the center-forward, Maia Mumford’s run who tapped in the goal and gave the Storm team the well-deserved presence in the final, that unfortunately resulted in a loss. The SLO Storm G97 team finished the tournament with an impressive record of 4 wins, 1 loss and 11 goals scored, 4 conceded in a total of 5 games.
Five games in three days, a lot of tired legs, but primarily a lot of good quality soccer and many things to be proud of. Congratulations to the coaching staff and players for another great achievement. The Storm G97 team will travel down to Chino Hills, CA this upcoming weekend to participate in the Legends College Showcase, a tournament that marks the end of Spring Season for the team.
