The SLO Storm G97 team has advanced to the Round of 16 of the Cal South National Cup, the highest of the division’s of State Cup.
The journey to the Round of-16 match started last weekend with the first game of the second round of group play (Storm G97 got a 1st round bye granted by Cal South) where the team tied 1-1 against the Poway Vaqueros – McGill on the only game of the weekend. The second round of group play continued this last weekend with a mid-day match on Saturday, May 2nd when the team had a comfortable 3-0 win past Select Cities Soccer Club with goals from Stewart (free-kick-unassisted), Park (assisted by Ragain) and O’Hare (assisted by Ragain & Park). After enjoying some team bonding on Saturday evening, the girls got back on the field early morning on Sunday, May 3rd and played a tough match against Beach FC that resulted in a 1-1 tie. With 3 minutes to go in the game and down 1-0, center-midfielder Stewart played a nice long driven ball over the opponents back-line for the outside-back, Robles to run on to it who took a great first touch towards the end-line and crossed the ball across the 18 yard box for the center-forward, Ragain to tap-in the goal that would give the Storm team the point they needed to go through to the next stage.
The team will prepare this week for the Round of 16 match against top-seeded in Group C, San Diego United Soccer Club, on Saturday, May 9th at 12:00pm that is being hosted at the So Cal Sports Complex in Oceanside, CA.
